  • Riverfront Entertainment District Partnership

The Riverfront Entertainment District is a continuation of the Northeast Strategic Initiative, a partnership that Council Member Hofstede initiated with the Northeast business community, the Minneapolis 2nd Police Precinct, and the Third Ward Council Office to identified key areas of safety and security concerns in Northeast.

Participants of R.E.D. meet monthly to review the previous month's crime statistics, receive an update from the Inspector of the 2nd Precinct and assess their growth and communication goal’s. All businesses located within R.E.D. boundaries are welcome to be included in this safety initiative.

R.E.D. began a year ago as the “Holiday Beat”. The four founding members; Jax Café, Stanley’s Northeast Bar Room, Psycho Suzi’s Motor Lounge and Grumpy’s Northeast, pooled their resources and hired additional police officers to patrol the zone during November and December of 2011. This initiative was considered a success and has become one of the primary objectives of the R.E.D. partnership.

The partnership would once again like to hire additional officers to patrol every Friday and Saturday night from Thanksgiving through New Years. The approximate cost is $7,000 for this additional service. To date, $3,100 has been committed for the 2012 season.

A fundraiser will be held to raise these funds on Wednesday, November 14 from 5-7p.m. at Jax Café, tickets are $10 and include complimentary appetizers, a cash bar and silent auction.

R.E.D. boundaries are: Marshall St. from 8th to 37th, Lowry from Marshall to 4th, 4th from Lowry to Broadway and Broadway and University South to 8th.

The Northeast Minneapolis Chamber of Commerce serves as the fiscal agent for R.E.D. and is an active member of the partnership.

Contributions of any kind are appreciated and will be used to further the partnership's goals which include:

    • Continued dedicated patrols within the district
    • Cell phones to be used by police officers patrolling the district
    • Development and implementation of a comprehensive communications system between residents and business owners
